Denim Heart Skort (Simplicity 8698 Review #2)

Hello everyone! This week's post is about a quick denim heart skort I made using Simplicity 8698 (vintage). If you saw last week's post, you'll recognize this pattern as the same one I used for the last heart choker skirt I made. Anyways, in this post, I'll break down the process, materials, and review the pattern.

THE PATTERN

Simplicity 8698, released in 1970, is a vintage scooter skirt pattern. It includes three skort variations, including a pleated version, a faux wrap skirt, and one tab front short version. I made the pleated version, View 2, which features a front and flap back that are sewn over the shorts underneath.

Here's what the lined front and back flaps look like.
For this second version of the skirt, I changed a few things from the first time I made it. Because I wasn't adding the heart choker belt details, I was able to move the zipper back from the center back to the side seam. As a result, I added the flap to both the front and back this time. For decoration, I added heart buttons to the front, following guidelines included on the pattern.

Also, I made sure to fix the sizing issues before sewing the skirt up, using what I learned from the first version I made.

This pattern has proven to be one of my favorites, and it's very versatile. Depending on the fabric and accessory choices, a skort made with this pattern can match almost anything. In the future, I wouldn't mind making the wrap skirt version or another pleated version in a taupe corduroy.

MATERIALS

All the fabric used in this project was leftover from previous projects. The navy denim is left over from some pants I made a few years back, and I was able to use up all of the leftover pieces for this project. It always feels so nice when that happens! No wasteful scraps that I still need to deal with. I was also able to reuse the polyester lining fabric from the previous skort I made with this pattern. So, the only things I needed to purchase for this project were the heart buttons and the zipper. All the materials are from JoAnn Fabrics (even the scraps I reused).

OUTFIT DETAILS

For the photos on this blog, I chose to pair the skort with my Wilson Tennis x Forever 21 Polo crop top. I love vintage style varsity fashion, and I think it pairs well with a skort for summer. In my hair, I wore the same scrunchie that I made to match the red tennis skirt I made last fall. For shoes, I ended up wearing sandals in the photos, but I'd probably wear white sneakers. I almost wore a pair of platform sneakers I had, but the laces were green. I might wear them if I switch out the laces for red or navy in the future.

CONCLUSION

Overall, this project was simple and straightforward, and most importantly- I think I'll get a lot of wear out of it! I've already worn the other heart choker skort several times, so I've found this pattern useful for creating consistent staples in my wardrobe. Skorts are perfect for running around in the summer without worry of being exposed.

  1. That's cool. Love the heart button details.

Will you ever film some of the process making behind your skorts?

    1. Thank you so much for your nice comment! :) I don't really have any filming experience, but I'm open to trying it out if people are interested. I'll definitely look into it for future projects!
